SOCIABLE KANT

Beginning in 1755, Kant gave lectures and pursued his university career. These middle years of his life coincided with a period of great social change in Königsberg. In 1758, East Prussia was occupied during the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763) by troops of the Russian Empire, among them many Baltic German officers. During this time social life flourished in Königsberg, which had previously been strictly religious in character.

Kant gained entry into the distinguished circles of the city and was regarded as a witty, entertaining guest. He dressed elegantly, played billiards and cards, and went on sociable trips into the surrounding countryside. Many of his new friends accompanied him over the decades to come. Kant stood in the midst of life.
